Pelvic floor therapy in Midland
A clear guide to strengthening your pelvic floor, and where Emsella fits alongside exercises, physical therapy and medical care.
What is the pelvic floor?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that stretches like a hammock across the base of your pelvis. It supports the bladder, uterus and bowel, helps control when you urinate, and works with your deep core muscles for posture and stability. Pregnancy, childbirth, surgery and menopause can all weaken these muscles further.
Signs your pelvic floor may need support
- Leaking urine when you cough, sneeze, laugh, jump or lift
- Sudden urges to urinate, or getting up often at night
- A feeling of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis
- Less pelvic floor awareness or control than before pregnancy
These symptoms are common, but they are not something you simply have to live with. A physician can find the cause and walk you through all of your options.
Pelvic floor therapy options
Kegel exercises
Free and effective when done correctly and consistently. Many women find it hard to know whether they are contracting the right muscles.
Pelvic floor physical therapy
A specialized physical therapist teaches targeted exercises and techniques. Your physician can refer you.
Emsella
An FDA-cleared, non-invasive chair that produces thousands of Kegel-like contractions in about 28 minutes, fully clothed. Cleared for urinary incontinence.
Medical evaluation and treatment
Some conditions need medications, pessaries or surgery. An OB/GYN can evaluate prolapse, infection and other causes.
Where Emsella fits
Emsella is designed to rehabilitate weak pelvic floor muscles and restore neuromuscular control for the treatment of urinary incontinence (BTL intended use). In a peer-reviewed study of 75 women, 81% reported a significant reduction in symptoms after six sessions (Samuels et al., 2019). Many women use it alongside Kegels or physical therapy. It is not a replacement for a medical evaluation.
